Podium Finish in Sports Car Debut at Monza!

What a debut weekend!

Luca Magnussen could hardly have hoped for a better start to the McLaren Trophy Europe. The opening round took place at the iconic Monza circuit in Italy, and in the very first sports car race of his career, Luca and teammate Callum Davies delivered an impressive second-place finish.

It was also Luca’s first race weekend in a McLaren Artura GT4, and therefore his first real opportunity to compete in sports car racing at this level.

And what a way to begin.

A Strong First Race
In the opening race of the weekend, Callum laid a very strong foundation. Starting from seventh place, he made excellent progress through the field and climbed to third during the first half of the race before handing the car over to Luca.

Luca then took over the wheel — and the pressure.

He continued the strong pace, quickly closed the gap to the car ahead and pulled off an impressive overtake in the famous chicane at the end of Monza’s start-finish straight.

From there, it was all about keeping a cool head, looking after the car and controlling second place all the way to the chequered flag.

And that is exactly what he did.

A second-place finish in his very first sports car race is a huge result — and a fantastic start to both the season and Luca’s new chapter in the McLaren Trophy Europe.

Pace, Battles and Lessons in Race 2
The second race of the weekend also showed that the pace was there.

Luca started from 16th position and quickly began working his way through the field. He climbed to ninth place before handing the car over to Callum halfway through the race.

Unfortunately, contact with another competitor meant the car had to make an extended pit stop to repair damage to the front bodywork.

That cost valuable time.

Callum returned to the track in 19th position and immediately began recovering places, but two major incidents elsewhere in the field first brought out the safety car and later resulted in a red flag.

The race therefore ended earlier than the team had hoped, leaving Luca and Callum with a 14th-place finish.

Although the Race 2 result did not reflect the car’s full potential, there were still plenty of positives to take away. The pace was strong, Luca made an excellent start, and the team once again showed that there is a solid foundation to build on.

A Debut Beyond Expectations
For Luca, the weekend at Monza was an important confirmation of his progress.

Moving from karting and single-seater racing into sports car racing requires adaptation. The car is shared with a teammate, pit stops and strategy play a much greater role, and the driving style itself is different.

But Luca quickly found his feet.

“What an amazing weekend! I’m really happy, both for myself and for the whole team. The first race went really well. Callum made a strong start, and I had a great battle towards the end where I really got the chance to show our pace. In the second race I got off to a good start, but unfortunately I was hit during an overtaking move, which cost us time in the pit lane. But once again, the pace was good, and overall it has been a debut weekend beyond expectations. Now it’s all about maintaining this strong momentum and continuing our development. A Strong Start to the McLaren Trophy Europe
Monza was a weekend that delivered a podium, plenty of valuable experience and clear signs that Luca and Callum have already developed a strong partnership.

The second-place finish in the opening race provides a major confidence boost, but most importantly, the weekend showed that the pace is there and that Luca can compete at the front from the very first round.

Now the focus is on building on that momentum, continuing the development and taking everything learned at Monza into the next round.

The next challenge will be Spa-Francorchamps on 26–27 June, where the McLaren Trophy Europe will race as a support series for the legendary 24 Hours of Spa.
