Podium at Misano – and the Championship Lead Remains Intact!

Another strong race weekend is complete — and Luca Magnussen and Callum Davies leave Misano with both another trophy and their championship lead intact in the McLaren Trophy Europe.

Misano World Circuit was yet another completely new track for Luca. Before the weekend, his only experience of the circuit came from the simulator, but once again he showed how quickly he can learn a new racetrack and find the necessary pace.

Throughout the practice sessions, the focus was on racing lines, data analysis and developing the car’s setup. Progress was moving in the right direction, and in the fourth and final practice session of the weekend, Luca and Callum set the fastest time in the Pro class.

Quickly Up to Speed on a New Circuit
Misano is a technical racetrack where precision and a strong setup are crucial. Several of the competitors already had previous experience of the circuit, while Luca had to learn it from scratch.

The weekend was also run in very hot conditions, placing significant demands on the drivers, the car and the tyres.

But as we have already seen earlier in the season, Luca quickly found his rhythm.

Together with Callum and the rest of the team, a great deal of work went into analysing data from the cars to find the best possible solution. The result was strong pace and plenty of confidence heading into the first race of the weekend.

From a Difficult Starting Position to the Podium
Qualifying did not go entirely as hoped, and Luca and Callum had to start the opening race of the weekend from 11th overall.

That made the task more difficult — but certainly not impossible.

From the start, the focus was on gaining positions. With strong pace, good decision-making and solid teamwork, the pair successfully worked their way through the field.

When the chequered flag fell, Luca and Callum crossed the finish line in second place in the Pro class.

Another podium was secured — and another important result in the battle for the championship.

A More Challenging Finish
The second race of the weekend proved to be a different kind of challenge.

Luca and Callum started fifth in the Pro class, but this time it was difficult to find the same pace they had shown the day before. Worn tyres made it harder to match the speed of their rivals, and the pair had to fight hard for every position.

They eventually finished fifth in the Pro class.

It was not quite the result the team had hoped for, but combined with the second-place finish from the opening race, the points were enough for Luca and Callum to retain the lead in the McLaren Trophy Europe championship.

Another Important Step in the Championship
The Misano weekend was another clear example of how well Luca has adapted to sports car racing.

At a circuit he had never driven before, he and Callum, together with the team, managed to set the fastest practice time in the Pro class, fight their way from a difficult starting position to the podium and maintain the championship lead.

It was also another weekend filled with valuable experience and important lessons that can be carried into the remainder of the season.

“Overall, it’s been a really good weekend! We arrived at another circuit that was completely new to me, so it was great to find the pace quickly and come away with another trophy. The team did a really good job finding a strong setup for the car. Saturday was excellent, while Sunday was a little more challenging, but most importantly we managed to retain the championship lead,” says Luca.

The Work Continues
Although the championship lead has been maintained, there is still plenty of work ahead for Luca, Callum and the team.

The weekend will now be analysed in detail. The positives will be carried forward, while the challenges from the second race will be used to make both the car and the partnership even stronger.

In such a closely fought championship, even the smallest details can make a major difference. That is why the focus must remain on constantly learning, developing and being ready for the next challenge.
